Hiring Addiction Staff: How to Pick a Winning Team
Hiring addiction staff in a treatment facility is probably one of the hardest (and most important) things that a company can do. Having the right people on the bus in the right seats (ala Jim Collins) is so very important for a treatment center. And having the wrong person on your team can really drag you and your whole facility down.
So…how do you go about hiring a real “winning” team? Here are a few suggestions:
#1 – Hire the right people.
This may seam obvious and trite but, if it were that easy, none of us would ever make any mistakes in hiring and wouldn’t be taking the time to read an article like this. Here’s a refresher on the “Three C’s” of hiring – Character, Competency and Compatibility. A good interview process can help determine a lot of these but many employers are also now using assessment and compatibility tests to determine the rest.
#2 – Define the win.
As a general rule, even if you get the right person on your team, you will not be lucky enough to keep them unless you “define the win”. This means that members of your team are aware of your organizations mission and goals and that everyone is pulling in the same direction to get those achieved. This requires communication and not just at the time of hiring. It’s an ongoing process.
#3 – Have clear expectations.
This is crucial to the long-term success of your team and your organization. For a team to be successful, each member must have clearly defined roles and must be working continually towards a common goal. Be sure to clearly define for your team members what is expected of them in their job duties and their job performance. A part of this process is to have regular, honest, reviews.
#4 – Keep an open dialogue.
Open lines of honest communication work wonders in most organizations. Who wants an organization with teams members who harbor resentments stemming from misunderstandings. Keeping the lines of communication open fosters an atmosphere open to sharing new ideas and new ways of doing old things.
Consider these tips as you go about hiring and building your team.
My friend actually owns a alcohol addiction clinic. I never knew that these we’re some of the processes he must of went through to pick his team. Finding the right nice, easy going team is for sure the gateway to success in the addiction industry.
I don’t think that I will ever be in this position in the future but this is some great information for anyone who is. I agree that in any workplace, staff is key.
